Sage Screenprinting in Baltimore, Maryland approached me to create a custom lettered logo piece for their printing business. The client wanted a piece that had a vintage, 70’s vibe with lots of juicy curves. This logo work is a study in taking an older, obscure logotype and redrawing it to improve the clarity, flow and overall impact and effect. Tri-State was a smaller bottling company out of Baltimore, Maryland in the 1940’s.
Better Devils is a custom lettering piece with a backward, left leaning slant which changes the dynamic and feel of the piece overall. The backward slant allows for opportunities usually not afforded with lettering that has a forward, right leaning slant. An example of this is the unusual ligature of the letter ‘R’ in “Better” where the loop sweeps back to cross the two T’s. For balance and continuity/flow, the letter V in “Devils” also has a backward swept upstroke.
This piece is a re-imagined spin on the current logo of the model rocket making company, Estes. Using a custom script with a vintage vibe adds some nostalgia to the visual effect to help bring us memories of our childhood and model rocket building. This piece was a blast. Pun intended.
